'The lights are back on'! - UC East opens at former Ford plant in Batavia, OH

28 OCT 2010 - Batavia, OH / The University of Cincinnati and UC Clermont dedicated UC East on Thursday, October 28, 2010. The 2-story buidling, formerly the office complex at Ford's Batavia Transmission factory, will now house UC Clermont Allied Health labs for majors including Surgical Technology, Respiratory Care, Physical Therapy Assisting, Medical Assisting, Emergency Medical Technology, and Multi-Skilled Health Technicians, as well as bachelor completion programs in Criminal Justice, Paralegal, Early Childhood Education and Nursing.

UC President Gregory Williams addressed the crowd of dignitaries, business leaders, UC supporters, faculty, staff, and students by praised the accomplishments of the community leaders in working together to secure the location that is now UC East. “The opening of UC East is the result of true collaboration among UC, the State of Ohio, Clermont County and Batavia Township Trustees and the developer, IRG. Internally at UC as well, this is a result of collaboration, with UC East involving three UC colleges and deans, nine departments, 800 students and 40 faculty and staff members.”

UC Clermont Dean Greg Sojka drew a huge ovation from the crowd when he stated, “In the past this building was a place of opportunity and prosperity for families in this region. Then it became a symbol for failure and abandonment. The lights were off and the parking lot was empty. Today the lights are back on and the facility has been transformed into state of the art classrooms, labs and faculty staff offices.”
